Strike Update...no rant today!!:)

Here are some photos from the picket line on Friday. I have enjoyed meeting my new picket friends!! Friday was a much better day and we were all in better spirits as negotiations were under way again. I just found out tonight that a tenative deal has been reached and we will have to vote on it before we go back to work! I am so glad I will be back to work this week! YAY!!! Enjoy the photos! Strike Update Rant!

As of today, we have been on strike now for 8 days and I have been very discouraged, grumpy and feeling overwelmed. Until today, both sides had refused to even continue negotiations. Life on the picket line has been disheartening because we feel like we aren't making a difference. Most EA's haven't even received any calls of support or encouragement from the teachers we work with ...I find this very frustrating because they wanted us to support them when they were on work to rule. It feels like we aren't needed in the schools as they seem to be getting by without us. In addition, we feel let down by our union and let down by our school board. Strikes seem to bring out the worst in people, which is sort of ironic since strikes are meant to enhance our future work environment. Strikes are very divisive I have learned and affect such a wide range of people. Rumours and false information run rampant. I am trying to remain positive and hopeful, but it is difficult. The good news is we found out today that both sides are willing to start negotiations tomorrow and hopefully a settlement can be reached by the time the weekend is over. I hope we are back to work Monday. I was on picket duty this evening and the attitude was much more positive because both sides are finally talking. We feel hopeful again. I have gotten to know a group of women this week that have made picketing more enjoyable..if that is even possible. They are great and we have some wonderful laughs together! We are happier because we received our first strike pay...YAY!! The good news is our union has a good portion of money in reserve because we haven't been on strike in 22 years!! So, we do have lots to be grateful for ! Until next time...

As I held her in my arms, tears began to fill my eyes. Her biological mommy and daddy don't want her. It is beyond my understanding, especially as a single woman who always wanted children. She is only 8months old. She is God's precious child. I am so grateful for the two families at my church who are foster parents to infants like this beautiful girl. I am so grateful they are loving these unwanted babies, even if it is only for a short time of their precious life. I pray as they grow into adulthood, they will know they were loved.

Durham District School Board EA's, Custodians and Secretaries on Strike!

Greeting me when I got home from an incredible vacation was the news that we were going out on strike Wednesday! I am now on a new adventure in my life that is not a pleasant one. I am still in shock that a settlement was not reached between our board and union, but realize I must change my mode of thinking and go with the flow!!! We haven't been on strike in 20 years! I had my first strike duty yesterday and it wasn't so bad!!! Today, we were shipped to Queen's Park for a rally that I must admit was boring, so I decided to spice things up... I convinced my coworkers to move to the area where the tv cameras were filming! Citypulse news at noon had their cameras rolling and I decided to wave to everyone out there in tv land, much like I appear in the photo above, minus the magnificant makeup application!!:) I was a bit starstruck because I watch Citypulse news - well Breakfast Television mostly. I did not realize they were reporting live! When the cameras stopped rolling for a moment, the cameraman said to me in a joking tone, " we try to get the kids to stop doing that!!:)" When I got home from the rally, my parents told me they saw me on the news!!!:) I was thrilled and thought I may be on the news at 6pm, but it turned out they edited me out!!! Go figure!!:) Well, strike duty comes early tomorrow, so I'd better sign out for now! I am praying a resolution will happen soon!

"Prettyboy"

" Prettyboy" was the original name of this 80's band, according to the man that sat beside me at Jack Astors last night! This stranger and I started to chat about the Leafs game on the overhead TV screen while I waited for my friend to come back from the ladies room! FINALLY, my friend returned and this man, who was still clearly stuck in the 80's ( yes, a grey mullet adorned his head!!) , asked us what we were "up to." When we told him we were going to a movie, he revealed to us that he was the manager of "Loverboy." It took me a few minutes to register then I asked him, "you mean the 80's band Loverboy?" He said, "yes!" He then proceeded to tell us that he was responsible for changing their name from "Prettyboy" to "Loverboy!" My friend and I were very excited as we both loved their music when we were in high school! We had no idea they were still performing! My friend and I didn't end up going to the movie, instead John (yes, at this point we were on a first name basis!) put us on the guest list for the Loverboy concert next door!! It was surreal...they still sounded exactly the same, but were looking pretty old and rough! We even caught a glimpse of them backstage smoking up before they performed. I found it quite sad. They were such a huge success in the 80's and now they seem "washed up" - still stuck in the 80's - yet still sounded amazing. I found it quite hilarious that they had a mob of security surround them as they walked through the crowd to the stage. I wonder if they were afraid the groupies - the little old ladies and my friend and I - would accost them! We had quite the adventure and a most enjoyable evening ! It was worth waiting 22 years to see and MEET Loverboy - aka - Prettyboy!

Moms Famous Fudge Recipe!

Mom beating the fudge meticulously in order to get the correct consistency! Licking the pot is one of my favourite things...mmmm...so tasty!
Pouring the fudge into the mould!

The budding fudge maker with the finished product ready to be served and eaten!
Growing up in the Whalen household was an adventure which gave me an incredible appreciation and deep love for food!!! In addition, I learned the secrets of the trade which helped me become the incredible cook and baker I am today!!! :) Both my parents are amazing cooks, but mom is the expert baker in the family. I cherish my childhood memories of mom always in the kitchen baking up a storm ! (I loved to bake alongside her with my "Easy Bake Oven!" ) We always had fresh, homemade baking for dessert..mmmm...so yummy! Mom continues to bake up a storm today and I thought I would share her now famous fudge recipe! Enjoy and may you make many memories in the kitchen for your family!

MAPLE FUDGE

1/4 CUP of Butter (do not use Margarine)
2 CUPS of Brown Sugar (packed)
1/2 CUP of Milk (l%, 2% or skim milk)

Put all ingredients above in pot.
PUT ON MEDIUM OR #7 (on stove)
Stir till dissolved and JUST BRING TO ROARING BOIL - THEN TURN DOWN TO #4 OR LOW
THEN BOIL FOR 10 MINUTES
Take off stove & ADD 1 TEASPOON OF VANILLA FLAVOURING
Take hand beater and beat until it becomes verify thick and pour into your buttered dish. (pie plate or loaf pan)
If you do not have hand beaters, then use electric beater, but watch until it becomes thick...be careful not to overbeat it.

Put in fridge for 5 MINUTES and then take out and draw the knife through the fudge to make the squares the size you want.
Add nuts if desired to the pot with the above 3 ingredients before you let it boil.
To Make Chocolate Fudge, just add quite a bit of Coca with the above 3 ingredients before boiling.
